Agronomy is the backbone of agricultural sciences and popularly referred to as „Mother of Agriculture‟ with a view to achieving the production potential of high yielding varieties in the era of green revolution due to the vigorous management of soil and water which exclusively belongs to an agronomic domain. It may not appear as glamorous or miraculous as nuclear science or atomic energy but like Ayurvedic medicines, it has the capacity to reach the poorer section of the society to bring out the desired outcomes. Agronomists can be able to synthesise production practices from several fields of specialization including soil science, pathology, entomology, statistics, and meteorology and so on. The problem of global food security remains unsolved. The increase in population means a growing demand for food in the world, whereas the essential factors in food production such as cultivated land and fresh water are decreasing continuously. The current trends of agriculture throughout the world shows that it is imperative to find a scientific and rational way to develop some technologies which can not only steadily increase the output but also can ensure the long term sustainability of natural resource base in the process of promoting agricultural development. Unfortunately, attention to the management of various natural resources and productivity has been found to be inadequate in many parts of the world.
