Till a few years ago some organizations had a department by the name of ‘Personnel department’. Usually, the functions of this department used to be clubbed with some other larger department in the organization. In the public sector this department was known as ‘Establishment section’ and the officer carried out the duties related to employees in addition to his responsibilities of some other ‘more important’ department. In short, not much importance was attached to the work related to the employees. But, of late, the importance of an independent full-fledged department has dawned on the employers and to-day we find every organization, (private as well as the public sector undertaking) has a Human Resource Management Department entrusted with all activities related to personnel – right from recruitment of an employee to his final discharge from service.
The book throws light on the scope and functions of the HRM department, involving manpower planning, its significance and the various steps involved therein. It also deals with the latest trends in managing the human resources engaged in the organization. This book has been written particularly keeping the youth in mind who desires to pursue a career in the field of HR. The authors feel that it shall also prove helpful to officials engaged in other departments of the organization. It shall make them realize the importance of working in close association with the official of the HRD, in planning their requirements of personnel. The authors shall be pleased to welcome any and all suggestions to improve the contents in future editions.
