Enhancing farmers’ income is the National agenda for the
agricultural system of our country. Improving land use with revenue
generating technologies is therefore, imperative. With the
advancement in our knowledge about plant architecture, physiology,
tree size control with dwarfing rootstocks & chemical bio-regulators;
significant achievements in high & regular yields have been made in
the temperate regions with the adoption of high density plantings. The
use of these technologies is quite lacking in the subtropics due to
many horticultural/orchard management limitations. The title of the
book ‘High Density Plantings of Subtropical Fruits-I: Litchi, An
Introduction to Contemporary Orchard Management’ seems to be
the right choice by the author. The litchi is a crop of high commercial
demand throughout the globe as there are few litchi producing and
exporting countries worldwide. It has thus, vast potential of revenue
generation for the rural poor. The problem is its low productivity
under normal planting densities and lack of knowledge for managing
it at closer planting densities.
