Women Empowerment in Contemporary India

Women account for almost 50 percent of the world’s population, the sustainability of development of whether a country or global economy can be greatly impaired if there is no improvement in the socio-economic status of women relative to men. Women empowerment refers to making women powerful to make them capable of deciding for themselves. Women have suffered a lot through the years at the hands of men. In earlier centuries, they were treated as almost non-existent. As if all the rights belonged to men even something as basic as bodily autonomy. As the times evolved, women realized their power. There on began the revolution for women empowerment. This book is an attempt to analyze the status of women empowerment in India using various indicators like women’s household decision making power, financial autonomy, freedom of movement, political participation, acceptance of unequal gender inequality, exposure to media, access to education, experience of domestic violence etc.
